Strategy of The SELARAS Program to Enhance Traffic Safety Awareness in Kediri City

The high number of traffic accidents in Kediri City, which is dominated by human factors, with students being involved as victims and perpetrators, requires adaptive safety education interventions to children's developmental stages. This study aims to describe the implementation strategy of the "SELARAS" program, which seeks to improve traffic safety awareness among kindergarten, elementary, and junior high school students in Kediri City. A quantitative descriptive approach with a case study design was applied to 1,098 participants, comprising 144 kindergarteners, 839 elementary students, and 115 junior high school students. The program integrates Piaget’s theory of cognitive development with educational methods tailored to each academic level: direct experiential learning for kindergarteners, educational games for elementary students, and digital evaluations (via the Kahoot platform) for junior high school students. Data collection using pre-tests and post-tests with instruments adapted to the characteristics of each level is then analyzed descriptively quantitatively. The results indicate a significant improvement in safety awareness across all levels: an increase of 27.98% for kindergarten, 24.46% for elementary school, and 14.38% for junior high school. These findings confirm that the effectiveness of educational outreach is determined by how well the methods align with the children's cognitive developmental stages. The SELARAS program contributes to the development of an adaptive safety education model and serves as an effective collaborative framework between educational institutions and the local government in fostering a generation that is conscious of traffic safety.
